The HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) Replacement Draft 2023 was held on Wednesday, 25 January. The draft provided an opportunity for the six franchises to fill the vacancies created by players who are either partially or fully unavailable due to other commitments. To begin with, Lahore Qalandars had the first pick and chose England’s Sam Billings as a replacement for Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan. Peshawar Zalmi followed suit and selected Richard Gleeson to replace the West Indies all-rounder Rovman Powell. Islamabad United chose Gus Atkinson and Tymal Mills to replace Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Alex Hales respectively. Multan Sultan on the other hand replaced David Miller with Izharulhaq Naveed. Quetta Gladiators reserved their pick for Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri Lanka.

In the Diamond category, Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi selected Fazalhaq Farooqi and Mujeeb ur Rehman respectively. Quetta Gladiators opted for Dwaine Pretorius and Will Jacks in place of Odean Smith and Jason Roy. Multan Sultan then reserved their replacements for Akeal Hosein and Tim David in the Gold category.
In the Silver category, Quetta Gladiators and Lahore Qalandars made their picks of Nuwan Thushara and Shane Dadswell to replace Naveen ul Haq and Harry Brook. In the supplementary picks, Lahore Qalandars’ Jordan Cox was replaced with Kusal Mendis, Multan Sultans’ Adil Rashid with Wayne Parnell, and Karachi Kings’ Tabraiz Shamsi with Faisal Akram. Islamabad United reserved their pick for Moeen Ali.

Rovman Powell, David Miller, Odean Smith, Akeal Hosein, and Tabraiz Shamsi will potentially be unavailable to their franchises from 8 March onwards due to bilateral limited-overs series between the West Indies and South Africa. Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, and Jason Roy are potentially unavailable because of England versus Bangladesh limited overs series to their franchises from 26 February to 14 March.
With the Replacement Draft 2023 being completed successfully, the teams now have a complete set of players for HBL PSL 8. The tournament will start on 5 February 2023 and continue till 21 March 2023. We can now look forward to an exciting season of cricket in Pakistan.
